Wiggle Room

When things do not go according to plan it’s easy to second guess yourself, blame yourself and/or others or worse. Let me remind you–to thine own self be true. “Know” yourself and “no” yourself. This means to have knowledge as well as discipline.

I just personally went through some very trying times. I could have whined more. I could have pointed the crooked finger of blame. What I found to be the most effective was to sit still. In the stillness came clarity. Let me explain.

  • When I stopped trying to put out each little fire as it erupted, I was able to take in the whole picture rather than viewing just one small snapshot.
  • I was able to see other areas which required my attention and would later have an effect on the overall end result.
  • I was able to hear myself think, listen for the Spirit’s guiding by quieting my own need for busyness that was not truly part of the solution.

STOP! THINK! LISTEN!

I want to take this moment to remind you that we are human. While some of us  don’t feel that excuses us from error, the fact remains we are mere mortals. Lighten up! Those high expectations and lofty ideas may not be in accordance with God’s master plan for you. This does not by any means determine that you should “give up” either. I want to encourage you to allow for some “wiggle room.”

Do these shoes make my butt look big?

Think back to your childhood days when it was time to buy new shoes for the school year. You’d slide your foot into that new shoe and shoe salesperson would be perched in front of you pressing on the toe of your shoe. “Can you wiggle your toes?” they would ask. Have you ever bought a pair of shoes that “fit” however, there was no room to wiggle your toes? Well, in the same manner, we cram our plans, agendas and the like into the shoe called life and don’t leave any wiggle room. In business, there is a term called, “a margin of error.” While we don’t want to think we are in error, we need to realize life happens and we won’t always foresee every possible variable in every situation. Leave room for growth and change–wiggle room, if you will.

How do you recover from unexpected changes in the careful plans you have made? I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to comment here on this blog post or visit me on my facebook biz fanpage. Go out and share your sunshine with someone! ~ Kim

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair. ~ 2 Corinthians 4:8 NIV

Shared Glories (Part 3/End)

After climbing to take in the incredible view of the city from the Acropolis and visiting the Parthenon and other masterpieces such as the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of the Wingless Victory, passing Hadrian’s Arch, we took off for another tour that afternoon.  Here’s my grandmother’s travel diary entry:

Kim had booked another tour to Sounion, it was not included in our scheduled tour itinerary and it was great. We passed the palace where the President lives and the Greek soldiers guard it. We watched them change guards. It was so neat and then we went to the museum & cathedral & got to see the Mediterranean Sea. It is gorgeous. I just wanted to see how the water felt on my toes but we didn’t get that close to the water. There were a lot of boats & skiers. We went to the Temple of Poseidon!

Soldiers in uniform--Greek style!

The following day promised to be a full one. We were leaving Athens and would be stopping in Thermopoli and staying in Kalambaka for the night.

They put our bags on our tour bus & we started out. Our first stop @ Themopolis to see the memorial to Leonidas and his brave Spartans in full armor, totally awesome. We then proceeded toward Kalambaka. We had lunch and then went to the monasteries of Meteora.  There are six monasteries and we went to the most popular one. You can not imagine this at all. The monastery sits about 3000 feet up on top of a rock mountain. Our bus drove all but the 100 steps you had to climb. All the things for the monks are carried up by rope & basket. There were things so old dated before Christ—robes & manuscripts. We really only got to see one of the monks up close but he didn’t speak English so I didn’t get a chance to say “Bless me Father for I have sinned.” (smile)

The monks live in monasteries nestled in these rock mountains!

One of the things I always admired about my grandmother was her willingness to try new things. Her mind was always open to the possibilities. She said funny things like, “The only difference between a good hair cut and a bad hair cut is two weeks!”

Our escorted tour took us to Delphi, Patras, Olympia, Mycenae and back to Athens. We took in so many incredible sights from the northern shore of the Gulf of Corinth crossing over to see the home of the original Olympic Games. The Olympic Stadium was breathtaking and the Beehive Tomb was mind blowing and who wouldn’t gawk at the sight of the Corinth Canal. Tours like this were made just for this purpose, to keep the wonder alive and the mind always seeking to know more.

I close this post with one final entry from my grandmother’s travel diary:

We came back to the Olympia Hotel, showered & had dinner then went to see the Greek Dancers 2 ½ hour show and yes, I danced with the Greeks on the stage!
